BATTLES IN ANCIENT LANDS
The war has ,moved into two of the world's most his-

The other is Da, mascus, oldest city in the world, the one

PERIL OF FRENCH DEFECTION
Fran,ce, the cradle of liberty, and De,mocraey is being
sold to Hitler for thirty pieces of silver ,by the rascals who
betrayed her armies into bondage a ye ar ago. Their
agreement to sell the right to use French seaports and
airfields in S ria and North Africa may spell defeat for
Britain. At,any rate, it adds tremendously to the difficul-
ties of the British Ihmpire.
The action of President Roosevelt in taking over all
French ships that had taken refuge in American ports
from German raiders meets with popular approval. Our
next move should be to take over reneh islands and col-
onies on this side of the Atlantic: otherwise they will be
turned over to the Germans for naval and air bases. If
France puts her a my, including two million soldiers now
,prisoners in Get,many; and her huge fleet of warships now
idle in home ports, into Hitler's service, along with what
she has already given, it will be a blow that not even the
tenacity of the British can su,dcessfully combat:
