GOLDEN ThiX'l“-~As= it if: wrillcn, The Just shall live by fa.illi.»--Roniana 1:17. Justificaticm by faith is a doctrine which liesnt thc vcry heurt of the gospel. It provides: the answer to man’s agcold question, “What must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). “This was a qucotion with which Paul had himself. grappled, and for years he had Sought salvation in the traditional Jewish way. Then one day he met Christ and lie undor- went a spiritual transforrmition through faith in Him, apart from the Works of the law. Because of that experience, and because of the divine revelations made to him, he was able to Show others how to be saved and how to live a life of vic- tory. Among the writers of the New ,Testament it is Paul who most Clearly sets forth the doctrine of justification by faith, a doctrine which has brought comfort of soul to multitudes, and the conscious: ness of sins forgiven.“ (Olinstcad). I. Justify Sinners? (Rom. 3:21-31). The portion of Romans just pre- ceding our lesson is devoted to a 5: devastating treatment of man'8 501— partitiont which begins at 9:45 a. in. fullness. bringing him face to face' with the question, “What can I do about it?" The answer has a hope- less ring to it. 1. Man has no righteousness of. his own, and cannot by any of his oWn works gave himself. “He has tried many ways, in every age, but no human being, or groups of men or women, have over devised any ‘ 'acheme. have ever conceived of any ritual. have ever established any rc- iigion by their own efforts, through which peace with God has been found and a sinner has been on- abled to stand before a holy God without condemnation. Man being helpless, God now intervenes" (Wil- ‘_ “bur M. Smith). _. 2. Christ paid the penalty for men‘s sin by His own blood. How gihlearly verse 25 declares the sacri- ficial death of Christ to provide a covcrlng of blood (the real meaning of l‘propitiation") which will enable 1a just God to forgive the sinner that believes in Christ (v. 22). Why not receive it in all its grace and power, not trying to explain it away or to evade its requirements? Why at- tempt to provide some other means or salvation, when we know that “without the shedding of blood is ‘noremisslon” of sin (Heb. 9:22)? 3. Man receives salvation by grace through faith, apart from Man can onLv be “justified {really by his grace" (v. 24). It is to; "them that believe" (v. 22), it is 1“taxatign mun" (W. 25. 26) and, hote with care. “man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law" (v. 28). Thus God establishes the'law (v. 31) and yet becomes the righteous justificr of a repentant be- iioving sinner. ' 11. What Happéns When a Man Is Justified? (Rom. 5:1, 2). These verses sound like the uplift— ‘ 513,3r music of a mighty organ, with celestial choirs joining in to sing. “Therefore being justified by faith, We have‘hwWhat‘? on many pre~ pious possessions, thch 01 which are here mentioned. 1. “Peace With God." “Through our Lord Jesus Christ” the barrier of sin with all its mali- cious enmity has been broken down World the believer is at peace with L God.“ What could be more Wonder- r ful than thus to be really “in tune With the Infinite"? That is some— thing. by the way. which can only be true of the believer, one who has both peace with God and the peace God flooding his soul. Every sin- ,i‘icr who covets that experience may have itwnowwby'faith in Christ. 2. Standing in Grace. , “To stand in grace is to occupy the position wbcrcin love is able to carry out its desires. To stand in trace is: to come intosuch relation- fihlp with the Lord that'He may do that thing that is in His heart, the thing which His love prompts. To Stand in favor is to be unafraid. It is I, to be able to pass into the presence n! One of whom we are unafraid. and know that there will be Welcome. It to know that to come into the pres- ‘jencc of this One is to receive, not necessarily a gift, but love, and of ‘iiimsclf, in a communion which is broken and perfect" ((3. Campbell , 3. Rejoicing in Hope. , The World is sorrowful for it has lost hope. but the believer rejoices Pin hope of the glory Of God" (v. The Christian has the forward look. His future is as bright as the promises of God. He knows that he 'lell one day see the glory Of God Povealed in all His holiness, power. love and grace. Even now the be- liever has that hope in his heart, find lives a rejoicing lite (or should do 90:). It‘s a great thing to be saved! .Wuww.9..-,-.,...-...
