Then the medical fraternity entered the picture. It was
known malnutrition and diet deficiency existed even in
well-to-do-hc mes. The scientist went to work to find out
why. Their discovery amounted to this: Many palatable
foods are sadly deficient in those vitamins that are essen-
tial to robust health. In the process of refining, flour lost
many of its health giving attri, butes.
So in 1938. with the facts known, the A,merican Medi-
cal Association went on record to the effect that in the
.processing of foods, the goal should be to retain the nat-
, al food value, and if this could not be done, the pro:
,eessed food should be scientifically enriched to restore the
: sses. It is to the credit of millers and bakers that they
o perated fully.

HOME AFTER l& MONTHS
Jefferson County boys who go to military camps under
the Selective Service Act will get home at the end of 18
months. An announcement to this effect was made at
Washington, after the President had signed a bill author-
izing him to make a my raining cover a period of 30
onths. It was good news to parents, most of whom had
esigned themselves to the idea of an additional year.
In announcing the plan, however, the War Department
said it was onditioned on the international situation If
war should come to America, those in the army most like-
ly would serve until it was over as in the World War.
Approximately 200,000 men will be due for release
from active service in 1941, the department said, and in
order that they may reach their homes prior to the
Christmas holidays their release .will be accomplished
before December 10.
The Department announces three priorities which
would govern the release of guardsmen and selectees.
Given first priority were dependency and hardship cases.
In second place were assi.gned men 28 years of age or over
on July 1, 1941. They would be released regardless of
their len Tth of service, but in the order in which their
ervice began. Married men who desire discharge at the
end of the originally set twelve months' service, were ac-
corded third priority.
